Since 1997, the department has been named as a Chair of Information Technologies.
From 2001 to September 2018, the department was headed by Dr. Ph.D., associate professor Yuriy Hryhorovych Leonov, since 2018, the department was headed by the professor, Doctor of Technical Science, Vadim Vasyliovych Romanyuk.
The new specialty of Software Engineering is available for Bachelors and Masters since 2015.
For more than 45 years of the Chair’s existence, the park of computing machines used in the educational process was completely updated seven times. Now the Chair has five laboratories with more than 45 computers and the necessary software.
Over 300 different handbooks and methodical instructions were published during the Chair’s existence. Teaching materials have been published by the teachers of the Chair under the title of the Ministry of Education and Science.
In many cases, teachers have been co-authors of handbooks published by other chairs. Various high-level programming languages are used in the educational process: Pascal, C++, Visual Basic, Visual C++, C#, Java, Python, SQL as well as the special packages including: Access, Excel, Maple, MathCad, MatLab and others.
In recent years, the content of disciplines taught to students has been significantly expanded and is updated every year.

The Chair carries out scientific researches in the following areas: automata systems and parametric systems, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning techniques, datamining technologies, AI in education. Significant number of scientific articles are published every year in various scientific journals (domestic and foreign).
The Chair has a student group, which is led by Ph.D. L.V. Hlazunova. Every year, the Chair hosts various programming competitions and hackathons. The best students take part in the republican contests. Every year, students present their projects at the University Scientific and Engineering Conference.
As the information technologies develop, the content of Chair’s disciplines is constantly updated.
The Chair of Software Engineering provides two educational programs for students of the University: Bachelor in Software Engineering; Master in Software Engineering.
Students have wide opportunities to freely choose courses. Students willing to study all the courses in English can join corresponding groups.
Starting from the 3rd year, students can join internships in leading IT companies residing in Odesa or other Ukrainian cities. The agreement on cooperation between the Chair of Software Engineering and KeepSolid Company allowed to create a specialized software development laboratory within the Chair.
Intense and fruitful educational activities of the Chair are now supervised by the head of the Chair – Doctor of Technical Science, Professor Gadzhiev Matin Magsudovych.
